Essay 3 final draft 11/23/09

I like all different genres of music. I love country, rap, rock, alternative, indie and a lot more. Throughout my high school days I was introduced to a lot of different kinds of music. Right now I’ve been listening to a lot of country music. My favorite songs are from a lot of different genres and I listen to them in different situations. These are in no certain order. They bring back so many good memories and bring me back to the good times in my life.

1.Miley Cyrus-Party in the USA Some people think she isn’t a good singer or she’s only 16 she sucks. Well, on the weekends with my friends this song comes on a lot. It reminds me of good times with my best friends late at night. It’s not necessarily the fact that I like the lyrics it just brings back good memories and I think those kind of songs are important.

2.Jason Aldean- She's Country This song reminds me of riding around in the country with my cousins. We would put this song on repeat during the day in the summer and drive around with nothing to do. Elle moved to Arizona and when I listen to that I always think of her. a lot of songs that remind me of her, but this is one of the most memorable, because we listened to it a lot before she left.

3.Eminem-When I'm gone
When we were listening to this song this past spring we were with one of our best friends, Sean. We dropped him off at his house and we got the news late at night that he had committed suicide.
Every time I listen to the lyrics of this song it takes me back to that night. I never want to forget that night so I listen to this song a lot when I’m driving around by myself. My favorite part is “And when I'm gone, just carry on, don't mourn Rejoice every time you hear the sound of my voice, just know that I'm looking down on you smiling.” That reminds me of something he’d say if he could.

4.Tracy Lawrence-If I don't make it back
I listen to this song a lot when I’m by myself. love the lyrics and I love his voice. It’s something a lot of people can relate to. There is just something about this song that makes me feel good. It’s just one of those songs you want to listen to really loud and take it all in.

5.Trace Adkins-You're gunna miss this I really love this song. It’s about how you always want your life to go faster, but really you’ll want it back some day. I didn’t think I’d miss high school just like most people don’t and I miss it more than ever.
This song was like a warning when I was in school and I appreciate it a lot more now. It's something I'd like to say to people who are younger than me and wish away time like I used to.

6. Counting Crows-Mr. Jones
This song takes me to my past. I remember driving around with my dad and listening to this song over and over again. I'll never get sick of this song because it just makes me happy. I still listen to it till this day. I don't fully understand what they're trying to say in the lyrics, but I still like it a lot.

7. Josh Turner-You're Man If I ever get married I would want a man like this. Josh Turner has a really deep voice and the way he talks about his woman is very appealing. I would want something like that. You can tell he is just an all around good guy by his lyrics.

8. Rob Thomas- This is how a heart breaks
This brings back a funny memory with my cousins. We were in South Carolina and we had just gotten down there. This song is sort of an inside joke, because you'll only find it funny if you were there or if you watched the video. We were listening to this song and goofing around. I jumped on the bed and broke it. We had it on video and we would always watch it. That song would always make us laugh really hard.

9. Garth Brooks- I’ve got friends in low places
I’ve always been a fan of Garth Brooks and this is my favorite song of his. all of my friends get together we like to sing it. If we're at a party or something everyone knows the song so everyone can relate to it in some way or another. I like to think I have friends in low places if my life were ever to mess up like he describes it.

10.Tim McGraw-Indian Outlaw Last but not least this song is one of my all time favorites. Everyone I’ve ever been around knows that I love this song. They relate the song back to me and I love that about it. All my friends like to sing this song when we're driving around with nothing to do or if we're at a bonfire or something. I love this song, because of the memories it brings me.

Those were a few of the songs that remind me of the good times I’ve had in my life. I’ll never get sick of these songs, because they bring back great memories I never want to forget. Listening to music is an escape from reality for me and I love it for that. Whenever I'm feeling down I like to sit around and listen to songs that bring back the good times.

Revison

My feedback was mostly positive, but there were some things I needed to work on. My peers said the beginning of my essay could use some more information. The first and last paragraphs of my essay need a little work also. I needed to work on the hyperlinks and get them working and make them where people want to click on them and watch the videos.
For the revision of my essay I’ll need to do a few things. First I’ll work on getting the first and last paragraphs where they make sense to the body of the essay. I’ll do that by elaborating the paragraphs, because they’re kind of short and they don’t really tell what I’m going to talk about in my essay. I need to have a thesis that relates to the entire essay and I don’t think I have one that does that just yet so I’ll work on that part before Friday.
I need to work on the hyperlinks and making them more efficient. I’ll work on them being more appealing so people will want to click on them and watch the videos in the hyperlinks. I didn’t have a word or anything to know if you should click on it. It was just a link and no one really knew what it was. I’ll make the essay hyperlinks where I begin to talk about each song. I list the song and you’ll be able to click on it and watch the video before you learn why I like it and what the song means to me.
My peers also said that they would like to have seen more detail about the song and not just cut it off so suddenly at the end of the paragraph. So I’ll work on giving more detail in the overall paragraphs.
I’ll check the spelling and grammar on my essay and make sure it’s all correct. There wasn’t any spelling or grammar mistakes my peers found, but I’ll double check and see if I find any mistakes that they didn’t catch.
I might also add a few other songs that I’ve thought of since we wrote the essay. They are also pretty meaningful and I’d like those to be in there too. That shouldn’t take too long and since most of my paragraphs with the songs in it are the same thing I should be able to add them and do the changes I’ll do to the rest of my essay.
I’ll work on all those things today and tomorrow and once I do all those things to revise my paper it should be ready to turn in on Friday.

Why am I in collge?

I’m currently undecided on what career I want to go into to. I’ve always wanted to be and elementary teacher since I was little, but now that I’m older I’ve been looking a lot into the medical field. I’ve been doing a lot of research of the two and I just can’t decide.

When I was growing up I got a chalkboard one year for Christmas. We had and unfinished basement and that’s where we put the chalkboard. Everyday after school I would make my brother and the neighborhood kids be my students and I would be the teacher. I had them down in that basement almost every day until they wouldn’t come down anymore. I loved teaching and being able to write on the chalkboard. My family always said they thought I would be a teacher. Now that it’s time to decide I can’t make up my mind.

I was looking into the medical field, because I like helping people. I was really looking into becoming an x-ray tech. I’ve had to get x rays a lot in my life and I always wanted to be one of those people. I know that going into the medical field is recession proof and they make more money than a teacher does.

My aunt is a teacher and I used to always help her set up her classroom right before school started. I loved doing that and I loved going shopping with her for school supplies. Ever since she’s become a teacher I’ve wanted to become one.

Now that I’m in college I want to make the right decision. Should I take the risk of becoming a teacher and then not getting a job? There isn’t a lot of job openings for teachers around this area and that would mean I would have to move and I don’t know if I want to do that. If I go into the medical field there is a really good chance I’ll get a job right when I’m out of school and I won’t have to job hunt for very long. I feel like I’m helping people if I go into either of the fields, but I don’t know which one to do.

I love kids a lot and it makes since for me to be an elementary teacher. I love being around them and I’m not one of those people who gets irritated with kids quickly. I would love to have my own classroom of first graders who are really excited to be there and to learn. That would make me really happy, but I don’t know if that’s possible in this area.

Then I bounce back to going into the medical field and being a nurse. I would get to help kids get better if I went into being a nurse for a pediatrician. The only thing that makes me want to stay away from that is seeing all the kids sick. I would want to make them feel better, but I don’t know if I could see them sick. I’d rather see them happy in a classroom learning from me.

I still have a little time left to decide what I want to do with my life. I’ll have to research more and maybe I’ll sit in a classroom or shadow a nurse and decide which one is a better fit for me. I just hope that I make the right decision and I don’t make a decision based on salary. I want to make a decision on what I want to do for the rest of my life. I want to love waking up in the morning and going to work. I don’t want to be those people who hate their jobs.

Pet Peeves

I have a lot of pet peeves. I guess you could say I’m a very irritable person. When people get on my nerves I get to the point where I want to punch them
I can’t stand when people say I mumble and they make me repeat what I said. I don’t mumble you just can’t hear. If you’d pay attention to what I’m saying I wouldn’t have to repeat myself. When someone gets irritated with me it makes me even more irritated with them.
Another thing that irritates me is when I’m at school and there’s a group of people talking about their weekend really loud. Not only are their voices loud their high pitched and so annoying. They’re talking about how drunk they got and the stupid things they did. I just want to go up to them and say nobody cares what you did this weekend. You’re not a hard ass, because you drank. You’re in college and everyone does.
Driving down the Lloyd Expressway with all the construction is bad enough, and when there are bad drivers it’s so much worst. I always get behind the Illinesians (people from Illinois). From the looks of things I don’t think Illinois requires their drivers to go through drivers ed. The day they turn 16 is the day they jump in a car for the first time and take off down the road. They always cut me off and they’re always side by side on a two lane highway leaving me no room to go around. Go back to Illinois or learn how to drive.
When people are in the lab and they’re listening to music so everyone can hear it makes me want to scream. Not everyone wants to listen to you music. You have horrid taste. And if your music isn't bad enough you singing it out of key certainly isn't making it any better.
What bothers me a lot is when I’m in Mount Vernon and it’s a Friday or Saturday night and there isn’t a damn thing going on. I end up driving around in circles a good portion of the night. It’s not just once in a while it’s every single weekend.
The cops in Mount Vernon drive me crazy. They are out to get kids. They’re too scared to do anything else. They could go up to Southwind Apartments and bust a meth lab, but they’d rather bust a high school party. They need to quit worrying about us, because we’re not doing anything too bad. I guess they’re just waiting for a meth lab to explode and kill somebody. They’re the reason our meth lab rate is so high.
I hate cocky guys. They think they’re so hot when in reality they’re not. You can’t be an ass hole and not be that good looking at the same time. It just doesn’t work that way. Then you have nothing going for you.
Another annoying thing is white girls that try and act ghetto. It’s not like they grew up that way they just one day decided they were going to act that way. I have a friend who used to listen to rock and roll and out of nowhere she decides she’s going to be ghetto and not to mention she sucked at it. I couldn’t help, but laugh in her face at everything she said.
I guess people in general annoy me. I have so many pet peeves and I can’t fit it into an essay.

Reading and Movies

There are two things that I’m really passionate about. When I have time to myself and I don’t have homework I like to read or watch a good movie. I love all kinds of movies and books. There are a few that are my all time favorite. I love books that I can’t put down just to go to bed and I love movies that really get you thinking. Last year I got the Amazon Kindle and I’ve read so many more books since then. I still enjoy a good book from the library though. There’s nothing like the smell of a good book.

I really love funny books. The ones that make you literally “laugh out loud”. One of my all time favorite books is Are you there vodka? It’s Me Chelsea by Chelsea Handler. She has a late night show and she is hilarious. I read this book within two days. There wasn’t a chapter I was reading that I wasn’t laughing out loud. It was one of those books that you just have to tell other people about. I had all my friends and family reading it by the next weeks. I love feel good funny books.

One of my favorite books is the Twilight series. There was times when I wouldn’t even shower, because I wanted to finish the next book. I couldn’t wait to get to the next book. When I finished it I was really sad. I wanted the books to go on forever. I felt like I was a character in the book. A lot of girls are really obsessed with the Twilight Saga and I’m pretty much the same way. I loved reading those books so much I would dedicate any extra time I had to reading them. It made me want to live in Forks, Washington even though I knew it was just a story.

My all time favorite book was A Child Called It by David Pelzer. This book was so sad and it made me realize that I was very lucky to have parents like mine. I couldn’t believe that someone would actually do that to their kid. When I read this book it made me mad. I hated that mom so much I wanted to go and find her. It made me realize that not everything is picture perfect. That book changed my outlook on life. It made me see the other side.
I have a few favorite movies that I will love forever. Titanic was one of my favorites when I was a kid. I would come home after school everyday and watch it until my mom came and picked me up from the neighbors. I still love it till this day. The way it was told. It was so sad and I couldn’t believe something like that happened. I would watch it so much I could tell you all the parts and what they were going to say. It’s a really long movie so that shows you how much I watched it.

One of my really favorite movies that most people didn’t get to see was The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This movie was so good. I even read the book. It was so sad and gave me an idea of what the Holocaust was like. I remember that little boy was so sweet and he just wanted to be friends with the boy behind the fence. It was very sad and I like movies that make me sad. I don’t know why I just like hearing other people’s stories.

My whole life I’ve loved reading and watching movies. I’m very passionate about them. I love getting recommendations from other people and I love hearing other stories. I wish I was creative so I could write a book or write a movie. I know that’s never going to happen so I try and watch and read as many books and movies as I can. I love that feeling of being in another place when you’re really not. Some people don’t like reading and I don’t understand why. I think it’s because our teachers in high school gave us really hard and boring books to read. If they would give us good books so many more people in the world would love to read.

Don't visit Mt. Vernon

Living in Mt. Vernon, IN for 19 years has made me realized that there are better places out there. If you want to come vacation here just turn around and head back to where you came from. There isn’t anything that would interest you and it would be a waste of your time. I know every road and every place here and there isn’t anything here worth seeing. Unless you have family there is nothing for you here.
When I was in high school there wasn’t anywhere to go and hangout with my friends. We would go and sit at the riverfront, which was as long as a driveway. They had a swing set and that’s about it. Since we were in high school we weren’t real interested in swinging on the swing sets. We would sit in our cars and watch the barges go by. If that sounds appealing to you then Mt. Vernon is your place to be. They have a huge silo that ruins the scenery. It could be a pretty view, but we can’t afford to tear down the silo. I can assure you it’s certainly nothing too exciting. We would all go down there and talk about how much we hate Mt. Vernon and how there’s never anything to do. That got us in a lot of trouble, because then we’d go spray paint signs or go drink at a friend’s house.
Another place to go sit at is McDonald’s. Some of us would go and sit in their parking lots all night long just to cause trouble. That’s not our fault though. If they didn’t want us to cause trouble they should have made something more exciting for us to do so we wouldn’t have to sit around all night and be useless. We would do that until they eventually put a sign up that said, “no loitering”.
Mt. Vernon has very little sit down restaurants. There is a Tequilas. It’s a Mexican restaurant that a lot of people go to. A lot of people go there, because it’s our best restaurant. I can’t argue that it’s not very good, because it is very good. Eating it all the time though it gets kind of old and it’d be nice to have another one to go to.
We did recently get a bar-b-que joint, but it’s always crowded since it’s new. I’ve eaten there a couple times when it’s not busy, but it’s hard to go there when it’s not. It’s a really small building and it gets crowded fast.
We have four fast food places to eat and they are dirty and most of the time they make me feel really sick. The people that work there look like they haven’t showered in over a week and you don’t want people like that making your food. The only place worth going to is Subway.
We have a lot of groceries for a small town, but none of them are worth going to because they’re also dirty. When you walk in you will notice that the place isn’t very taken care of. The floors are always dirty. No body wants to buy their food from some place that doesn’t clean the floors.
Another thing we have that we don’t need is a lot of gas stations. We have more gas stations than food joints. There is no reason to have 5 gas stations on one street. It makes the town look gross. There is nothing pretty to look at. There’s just a bunch of gas stations that are also very dirty.
If you have the choice to come to Mount Vernon I would suggest don’t. I grew up here and I’ve seen everything there is to be seen and it’s not worth your time or money. There isn’t a mall to go shopping at and there isn’t a restaurant worth coming to. It’s a cheap town and it could use some reconstruction. Avoid it if possible. There is nothing here worth your time. You should go visit somewhere that’s worth seeing. Mount Vernon is not the place to be. If it weren’t for my family and friends I would have left a long time ago.

Shows that impacted me when I was younger

When I was younger I would watch a lot of shows that impacted how I acted around other kids. There were shows that caused me to act immature and rude and there were shows that taught me life lessons that I still use to this day. I would watch a lot of Nickelodeon shows. These shows were made to teach kids how to act around other people. There were two shows that impacted me the most and that was Barney and Rugrats. These shows taught me life lessons that everyone has to learn at one point in their life. I learned it by watching TV.
I remember Aaron and I watching Barney from when he was born till we were in pre-school. We had a lot of Barney attire. I remember clearly having pajamas that I’d wear every night to bed. I had all of Barney’s tapes so I could watch him any time I want. So I would lie in bed in my pajamas and watch Barney until I had to go to bed.
The show taught me life lessons. One thing I learned was how to share. Barney was always sharing with all his friends he had around. I learned that sharing was the right thing to do. I was always really shy when I was a kid so it wasn’t hard for me to learn to share. He was always sharing his stuff so I would think to myself, if Barney does it then I should too.
Barney also taught me how to play with everyone and don’t leave anyone out. He always had a bunch of friends over and he wouldn’t leave any of them out. That taught me in pre-school to play with the kids who other kids wouldn’t play with. If I saw someone who didn’t have anyone to play with I’d go up to them and play. That’s what Barney did so I thought I should be like him. I remember going up to kids who were really shy and I’d ask them to play. They’d look at me like I was the nicest person they’d ever met.
I learned to use manners while watching Barney. He would have episodes where he would teach people how to use their manners. I took his advice and used my manners, because I knew it’d be polite. I did anything Barney said to do on his show.
A big part of that show is to learn to love one another. The beginning song is about loving your family. We would sing that song all the time and it taught me about love and what it meant.
When I got a little older and starting Elementary School I started watching Rugrats. It was about babies using their imagination and going on adventures without leaving the house. They would always get into some sort of trouble and they’d have to figure out how to get out of it.
Rugrats taught me how to use my imagination. I’d pretend to go places like they did and it would keep me out of trouble. I wouldn’t get bored during the day if I couldn’t find anything to play with. There were a lot of episodes of Angelica being mean, but that didn’t affect me. It didn’t affect me, because all the other characters didn’t like her. I didn’t want to act like her if they didn’t like her.
The show also taught me not to lie. There would be episodes where one of the characters would lie and they would get into a lot of trouble. I knew that if I lied about something I wouldn’t get away with it, because they never did. When I had the chance to lie I wouldn’t, and I wouldn’t get in any trouble for telling the truth.
These two shows had a constructive impact on my life as a kid and I still use all the things they taught me. I still use my manners and I know to share with other people. I kept myself occupied when I was little by using my imagination. That kept me from wanting everything that was on TV. Watching those shows have taught me a lot of things that I still use today.

Essay # 3

I'm Dee. I'm 19 years old and I freshman at USI. I'm currently undecided. This blog is for my third essay in my English 101 class. I'll be posting blogs throughout the next few weeks. Have a good day :]
